The Million-Dollar Question…
I think it’s only appropriate that my first blog entry be about the single question I get asked the most. It often starts with “So… uh…” Or “Do you mind if I ask…” Or it’s just blurted out quickly followed by an apology.
“How did you get into this?”
It all started 10 years ago. Like any other teenage girl with three younger siblings, I hid in my room a lot. And since this was before we evolved the extremity called a smartphone, the only thing to do in my room was play with hair, makeup, and nail polish. With the help of women’s health and fashion magazines I considered myself to be quite the trendy teen (my zebra striped prom dress was certainly proof) But the one thing that eluded me, no matter how many drug store skincare products I begged my parents to buy, was clear skin.
So at seventeen years old, I enrolled in the Esthetics program at a local Cosmetology Institute, or “beauty school” as most call it. My experience there was, how do I say this? Slightly traumatic. Being a homeschooled tomboy, I was ill equipped for the drama that ensues when you lock 50 women who don’t know what they are doing, in a small space, and tell them to make each other beautiful.
I made it out of “beauty school” alive in the spring of 2006. Being as young as I was, and still struggling with my own skin, I had a difficult time “breaking out” into the skincare scene. Pun intended. So through those first rough years a waited tables on the side to get by. It wasn’t until the summer of 2011 that I got a job at my first waxing spa.
I quickly found waxing to be a much better fit for my personality than the day spas I had previously worked in. It felt like the perfect blend the fun fast-paced environment of waiting tables and my knowledge and experience in the beauty industry. And ironically my skin cleared up once I settled into waxing.
So there you have it! My journey to becoming a Brazilian Waxer. And here I am in my above mentioned zebra striped prom dress...
